[Xmas Day 4] You Know What’s An Instant Feel Good Moment?
On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me..RAK (Random Act of Kindness)
Hello, friends of Yours,Yan
🎄 On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me..
RAK (Random Act of Kindness)
More than a year ago, when I was actively writing, I made some new writer-friends in the online writing community. They are like a special group of friends whom I felt connected and understood.
One day, I woke up and felt an urge to gift a dear fellow writer-friend, Kristi her first “coffee” of 5 bucks. (Technically it was treats for Dezi.)
(By the way, please check out her newsletter Grief Notes, her stories on Medium, and her oh-so-dashing fur boy, Dezi on Instagram. Warning! Dezi might just steal your heart and wallet. LOL )
I am not sure why but the moment I send her “coffee”, I felt like a millionaire.
To some, 5 bucks may seem nothing but the act of actually giving, especially when it’s giving willingly and from the heart, somehow made me feel good instantly, even though I was in a bit of a financial struggle at that time.
The Science of Giving
Researchers called this the helper’s high or giver’s glow.
Dr. Stephen Post, a professor of preventive medicine and bioethics at Stony Brooke University School of Medicine, who authored the book, “The Hidden Gifts of Helping and Why Good Things Happen to Good People”, shared in this Denver Post article that we can have better and more creativity, meaning, resilience, health and even longevity when we give.
In fact, just the simple thought of helping others, whether is it donation or act of service, makes you happier, according to brain scans.
Thinking of helping others activate the part of our brains associated with the reward-and-pleasure centers. And actual face-to-face helping further enhance happiness in the brains too.
Helping others has always been a ageless wisdom passed down to us from generations to generations. And now science has confirmed the benefits of giving, not just for the receiver but for the giver too. It’s a double win situation.
Personally, after giving, I usually feel a wave of inspiration and sets a good momentum with my day.
I do hope this season, more of us remember to give from their heart, a random act of kindness. Because I know, from first hand experience, kindness indeed begets kindness and wouldn’t it be nice to know we each have play a part in keeping the world of kindness go round and round?
Besides just feeling good, I was pleasantly surprised by learning something new after I give, like learning about RAK week!
💝 DAY 4 GIFT FOR YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Do you have 180 seconds to spare?
I’ll like to invite you to be kind to yourself with this exercise.
Stand tall, feet apart.
Inhale fully, raise both hands out to the sides of your body, all the way above your head.
Exhale fully, bring both hands down back to the sides of your body.
Repeat this for a total of 8 times.
Place right hand on your chest, and left hand on your belly button.
Close your eyes, and inhale into your belly (left hand). Feel the rise and fall of your belly.
As you do this, notice the sensations of your body and the words that may pop up in your head.
Do they feel nice, kind and joy for you?
Or do they sound like worries, fears and anxieties? If it’s the latter, try this.
— Inhale deeply into the belly again.
— Let out a full sigh completely.
— Repeat this a couple of times.
— Find a short statement of affirmation.
(Here are some suggestions)
I am well taken care of right now right here.
This too shall pass and I am safe.
I am well provided for in all ways.
I just allow myself to relax.Repeat this until you feel a bit more relaxed even it’s a teeny weeny bit.
